When you struggle with how your facial skin appears because of sun damage, fine lines, or dark spots, Kouris M.D. Cosmetic Plastic Surgery can perform a skin analysis at our Hinsdale, IL office to determine if you qualify for InMode's Lumecca IPL (intense pulsed light) therapy. A photofacial with IPL is a skin rejuvenation treatment for adult men and women with hyperpigmentation or wrinkle issues on their neck and face. A photofacial may be a noninvasive process; however, it can be highly effective and create great outcomes. Dr. George Kouris, a board-certified aesthetic plastic surgeon, uses Lumecca intense pulses of light energy that heat the skin cells to ignite the natural healing process and increase the production of collagen. Over time, you should begin to see a healthier complexion with an improved tone and less dark spots.

IPL Ideal Candidates
IPL reaches the deeper layers of your skin to improve several complexion concerns (particularly brown lesions and sun spots) with minimal or no downtime. Candidates for IPL at Kouris M.D. Cosmetic Plastic Surgery will have a combination of concerns with their complexion, such as rosacea, sun damage, brown spots (hyperpigmentation), rough texture, wrinkles, visible pores, redness, freckles, melasma, sun and age spots, or broken capillaries. Dr. Kouris will examine your complexion to determine if you will benefit from IPL at your initial consultation.
IPL Procedure Technique
IPL is performed at our Hinsdale, IL office in around 20 – 30 minutes in our minor procedures room if no other treatments are performed. To prepare for the IPL facial, your technician will wash and dry your skin before protecting your eyes with special laser shields. The IPL is performed using an InMode applicator that will pass over the skin while emitting laser energy pulses. While many patients may have mild discomfort throughout the IPL, it's usually bearable given the short treatment length.
What to Expect with IPL
There usually is no downtime needed with an IPL photofacial treatment, but you may leave our office with your complexion a little red and swollen. This will decrease naturally as the day continues — it may be masked with cosmetics if you prefer. Kouris M.D. Cosmetic Plastic Surgery advises you to keep cream on the skin's surface to minimize any irritation and promote healing. It may also help to use over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medicine to help decrease swelling. Over the course of 2 – 5 days, the sun damage and other irregularities under the skin will rise to the surface skin layers and then start to flake away. It is necessary to protect your skin with sunscreen as often as possible after an IPL photofacial treatment and to not pick at your skin. While you will have some visible improvements after your first treatment, your complexion will attain ideal results with multiple IPL treatments. Dr. Kouris suggests most patients get 3 – 6 sessions performed monthly at Kouris M.D. Cosmetic Plastic Surgery.
IPL Frequently Asked Questions
How quick are the results from IPL?
As soon as the first treatment is complete, you will likely notice an immediate improvement. Several treatments will present an even better result. Your personal regimen will depend on how severe the damage is, as well as your skin type and whether your regimen is for spider vein treatment or conditions, such as sun damage. The type of regimen determines the energy settings.
What are the possible side effects of IPL?
The vast majority of those treated don’t have any side effects at all. Skin reactions generally resolve in a matter of a few hours. Some people might experience sensitivity to sunlight right after treatments. We highly recommend avoiding direct sunlight or tanning.
Do I need to prep for IPL?
For a month before beginning the regimen, you’ll need to refrain from direct or excess exposure to sunlight. You should also discontinue the use of minocycline, tetracycline, doxycycline or Retin-A/Renova several days before each treatment. Patients should protect the treated areas with sunscreen between sessions.
Why so many sessions?
Lumecca IPL photorejuvenation typically requires two sessions for optimal results. This is an incredible improvement from other IPL technologies that may require as many as six sessions.
