The purpose of undergoing any type of cosmetic surgery is to enhance your looks and increase your levels of self-esteem and confidence. So, it is more than understandable when a procedure ends up failing and causing more problems. One of the most common problems that occur with a breast augmentation surgery is a condition known as symmastia. This is a condition where the two breasts join together and create what is commonly referred to as a uniboob. While symmastia is not all the most common breast-related issue we see, it is certainly one of the most dreaded complications following breast augmentation. Here at Kouris M.D. Cosmetic Plastic Surgery, we specialize in a range of breast-related procedures, including correcting symmastia.
With Dr. George Kouris MD and his team of skilled and experienced professionals, the priority always has been and always will be to make every surgery successful. It’s the least that our patients deserve and it is why we are committed to always staying up to date with the newest trends and techniques. Our goal is to help our female patients get the body they want and when a breast augmentation or correction procedure does not go as planned their self-esteem and feeling of self-worth and beauty can suffer. That is why we are here! Women who have symmastia can schedule a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon to see what options are available to them and to have the condition corrected by our plastic surgery experts.
Causes of Symmastia
Symmastia occurs when there is an issue with the breast positioning and alignment that cause them to converge. It can be caused by a congenital condition or, more commonly, as a side effect of breast augmentation. The condition is most prevalent when:
- Large implants have not been properly placed and secured during an augmentation
- The patient is petite in size and has implants that are too large for their body
- The pockets used to hold the implants are too close to the midline area of the chest
- Subglandular implants are done rather than the more successful submuscular implants
- Poor positioning of one breast either naturally or from poor augmentations
